University of Leicester students are aiming to become the highest placed UK electric vehicle team at Silverstone for IMechE Formula Student 2017.

University of Leicester Racing (UoL Racing), a team of around 30 students from a range of disciplines across the University, is working to design and build a single seat electric racing car to compete at Silverstone against over 150 University based teams from all over the world.

They are crowdfunding to raise £3,000 to cover the cost of entering the competition, materials and the running costs associated with manufacturing and running an electric car.

They have generated a great deal of interest in the project, raising over £2,000 so far.

The College of Science and Engineering at the University will support the team by matching the money raised up to the £3,000 target, so for every £1 donated, the team will receive £2.

The UoL Racing team finished as the third placed UK electric vehicle (EV) team in the Formula Student 2016 race and their current aim is to be the highest placed UK EV team at Formula Student 2017 when the competition culminates at Silverstone between 20 and 23 July 2017.

IMechE Formula Student is the largest student motorsport competition in the world, with over 3000 students from more than 150 teams and six continents attending.

Ross Brawn, former Team Principal of the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team, returns as competition patron and will meet students at the opening ceremony.

Ambassadors this year include Paddy Lowe, Executive Director of Mercedes AMG Petronas F1, Willem Toet, Former Head of Aerodynamics at Sauber F1, former Formula 1 driver David Brabham and BBC science presenter Dallas Campbell.

Dr Paul Lefley, from the University of Leicester’s Department of Engineering, said: "The team have worked very hard this year to build an all electric racing car. The electrical and electronic systems are a significant improvement on last year's car, with the twin electric motor 32kW transmission, and for the first time in-car telemetry. I have high hopes that they will get through the strict scrutineering process. We have every chance to be the first UK University to pass scrutineering for an all electric race car."

Thomas Kane, Team Principal of UoL Racing, said: "After the groundwork we set with last year's car, University of Leicester Racing has never been better placed, with the help of donations, to become the number one UK electric vehicle team when we race at Silverstone this summer."

Stuart Bevan, UoL Racing graduate, former Structures Analyst at Red Bull Racing and most recently at Manor Racing F1, said: “Formula Student at the University of Leicester Racing gave me a significant advantage when it came to job-seeking.

“I learnt the underpinnings of a successful team which I have carried into the pinnacle of world motorsport.”

Andrew Deakin, Chairman of Formula Student, said: “It’s brilliant to see so many teams from around the world applying for Formula Student 2017 – it shows that the competition remains one of the most important learning experiences for those aiming to combine their studies with exposure to a real world engineering project.

“We’re also delighted to see new teams from representing a variety countries registering to take part. Formula Student is a global competition and we want to continue to encourage brilliant young engineers from across the globe to improve their practical skills and get ready to play their part in the vibrant worldwide engineering community.

“The innovation demonstrated by these young engineers gets more impressive every time and I’m extremely excited to see what they have in store for us this year.”
