Sports teams from the University of Leicester will once again face sporting rivals De Montfort University in the biggest event in their sporting calendar, Varsity, which kicks off on Thursday 16 March.

Team Leicester is hoping to repeat the success of last year’s season, which saw them triumph with an almighty score of 35 to DMU’s 12.

In addition, this year the Vice-Chancellors of both universities will go head-to-head captaining their staff teams for a football duel on Friday 17 March from 7.30pm at Beaumont Park. The event, hosted by DMU, has been organised as part of their #Loveinternational campaign in support of international staff and students of both universities.

Varsity will run until Wednesday 22 March where the games will culminate with two huge rugby fixtures at the home of the Leicester Tigers, Welford Road stadium.

Highlights from last year’s competition included a record-winning 53-0 win by Team Leicester in the women’s rugby - the first time over 50 points had ever been scored in the Women’s Varsity fixture, and extending their unbeaten record to 13 years. Leicester’s men’s rugby team also kept a clean sheet by beating DMU by 34-0, seeing them undefeated in four years.

Arguably the performance of 2016’s Varsity programme came from the University of Leicester Boat Club in the most traditional event of all Varsities. Despite having a strong Rowing programme, DMU were comprehensively beaten by Leicester.

President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Leicester, Professor Paul Boyle, said: “I’m excited for this year’s Varsity competition with DMU and pitting our staff team against Dominic’s on Friday to support their #Loveinternational initiative – As Vice-Chancellor of a University that welcomes thousands of international students from far flung areas of the world I am delighted to support this initiative and I hope this the first in a long line of inter-University staff sports events.”

“Despite the rivalry which runs between students of both institutions, the matches are played in good spirit and is the highlight of the year for many competitors. However, Varsity is not just a time for competitors; the period offers a chance for students and staff to support Team Leicester. With some matches being played in standout arenas such as the Leicester Arena and the Welford Road stadium, home to the Leicester Riders and Leicester Tigers respectively, the period is a real spectacle of sport.”

Rasteen Riyahi Boni, Student Sports Officer, said: “One of my fondest memories from my time at Leicester was the Rugby Varsity at the Tigers’ in my first year. With thousands of fellow students and staff cheering alongside you, the atmosphere is truly electric and it is impossible not to feel a sense of pride and community for our University. All the teams, from Ultimate Frisbee to American Football have been training exceptionally hard these past few months, so make sure you see as many fixtures as possible. I know from my own experience how much of a huge difference having a side-line of support makes. So with that, get your banners, chants and housemates at the ready and let’s make this our biggest Varsity yet!”
