As part of International Women’s Day at the University of Leicester, Kajal Nisha Patel, Leverhulme Artist in Residence (2016), will be in conversation with Dr Melanie Kennedy from the University’s School of Media, Communication and Sociology.

Visual artist Kajal will be talking about her film work Four Women, Five Stories which presents ‘an intimate view of British South Asian women’s lives’. The work led to further commissioned projects relating to protest and activism. Kajal will consider how art, craft, digital activism and storytelling can be used to foster critical discussion and social change.

The screening and discussion is free to attend and will take place in Ken Edwards Lecture Theatre 2 at the University of Leicester on Tuesday 7 March at 6.15pm.

Kajal is a visual artist, working between the UK and India. Interests in human rights and social justice have led Kajal to document the marginalised experiences and multiple identities of British South Asian women.

Kajal said: “It is really good that the University of Leicester is so engaged with women’s issues and is holding so many events as part of International Women’s Day 2017.

“I hope that the momentum from this week and the University’s ongoing HeForShe campaign will continue to grow and help to ignite the public’s imagination over issues of equality.”

Dr Melanie Kennedy, from the University’s School of Media, Communication and Sociology, said: “This screening and discussion with Kajal Nisha Patel is an opportunity for us to consider the varied ideas of what it means to be a woman and the range of identity politics that exist in individual stories of womanhood. The event speaks to the rich body of work being carried out in the School of Media, Communication and Sociology – and across the University – into how gender identities are mediated, represented, experienced and understood.”

Four Women, Five Stories: Film Screening and Q&A with Kajal Nisha Patel and Dr Melanie Kennedy takes place from 6.15pm to 7.15pm on Tuesday 7 March in the Ken Edwards Lecture Theatre 2 at the University of Leicester. This filming and Q&A will be followed by refreshments in the Ken Edwards foyer.

This is a free event and no booking is required. All are welcome.
