The University of Leicester is bringing festive cheer to its campus again this year with a jam-packed Christmas line-up as part of the Students’ Union’s Christmas Countdown campaign.

On Thursday 1 and Friday 2 December, the centre of campus will be transformed into a winter wonderland complete with ice rink, real reindeer and Christmas market.

Once again, staff, students and members of the public will be able to get their skates on for 30 minute sessions – and this year it will be completely free!

Santa’s little helper handlers will also be bringing real reindeer from 2-6pm on both days which will be available for photographs - including inside a giant inflatable interactive snow globe where photographs will be uploaded onto the Students’ Union social media accounts for people to tag themselves in.

Santa’s grotto, bottle bar and festive music will complete the two-day event.

Other activities on offer to students until the end of term on Friday 9 December include craft workshops, a carol service, Christmas jumper competition with proceeds going to charity and a festive movie marathon.

Georgie Tansell, Marketing and Events Manager at the University of Leicester Students’ Union, said: “The Christmas Market has to be one of my favourite events to collaboratively organise and experience on campus. The atmosphere is incredibly festive and joyous, there is something rather magical about our students, staff and local residents coming together to enjoy our Christmas offering on campus, there is a real sense of community. We look forward to welcoming everyone to this year’s ‘bigger and better’ Christmas Market, including real reindeer!”

Jim Butler, Head of Corporate Events at the University of Leicester, said: “We are so excited to be able to share some Christmas cheer once again with our students, staff and neighbouring communities.

“We’ve organised some fantastic events this year including Sir David Attenborough’s visit, Tim Peake’s honorary degree ceremony, our record-breaking Leicester Heroes drive with Rik Basra for the Anthony Nolan Campaign and Literary Leicester.

“Celebrating Christmas on campus is a great way to reflect on the year and have some fun. There will be something for everyone – from free ice skating, reindeer, market stalls and Christmas music – so come along and join in the festivities at the University of Leicester.”
