Executive leader at Australia’s biggest university appointed as Chief Marketing and Engagement Officer

The University of Leicester has appointed an award-winning international higher education strategist to lead its external relations operations.

Ms Margot Burke, currently head of marketing at a world top-100 Monash University – Australia’s biggest university with campuses in five countries – will take up the post of Chief Marketing and Engagement Officer at the University of Leicester in February.

She will spearhead diverse teams across marketing, student recruitment and admissions, alumni relations and development, news and communications, public affairs and external relations activities.

Ms Burke said: “Having had the opportunity to learn about Leicester’s ambitious agenda and talk to more than 40 key stakeholders while Chairing a review of the External Relations division, I found the prospect of joining Leicester irresistible.

“Leicester and the East Midlands are also appealing. I love the vibrancy of living in a multicultural city.”

Ms Burke is well known for her brand work within the Australian higher education sector and was awarded the Universities Australia Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015 for marketing excellence and her commitment to the sector.

She has 20 years’ experience in higher education and a further 10 years’ experience of marketing in the corporate sector, working in the US and Australia.

During her four years at Monash, Ms Burke rebranded and repositioned the University, boosting both domestic and international enrolments and was instrumental in implementing a strategy to build reputations and rankings.

Monash is among Australia’s most international universities with 70,000 students studying across three campuses within Australia and a number of other international campuses in Malaysia, India, China, South Africa and Italy. Monash is currently placed at 74th in the list of world 100 universities.
