Leicester University Voices (LUV), a gospel choir at the University of Leicester, has been shortlisted to sing at this year’s national finals of a national university choir competition.

With entries from over 25 universities, LUV will be returning to the stage a year on from winning the 2015 title, to defend their crown alongside seven other finalist choirs in the 6th annual University Gospel Choir of the Year (UGCY) competition 2016.

The competition, which will take place on Saturday 5 March at the Hippodrome, North London, will be hosted by MOBO Award Winner Rachel Kerr.

The UGCY competition allows university choirs to perform in front of a large audience, as well as receive feedback from some of the leading figures in the UK Gospel scene.

Since its creation, UGCY has held five annual competitions, celebrating the talent of 3000+ students from various universities across the UK and has worked with the likes of ITV’s The X-Factor.

Pelumi Obasaju, Vice President at Leicester University Voices, said: “UGCY is an amazing platform for students to not only showcase their talent but also share their passion for gospel music with like-minded individuals. Since winning UGCY 2015 so many opportunities have come our way and it has enabled us to spread the gospel message more around campus. LUV has grown this year, yet we still remain a family not just a group of singers.”

Lorraine Wright, Founder of UGCY said: “We are excited to announce that the University of Leicester’s gospel choir will be back to defend their 2015 title. UGCY aims to bring many talented young individuals together through gospel music, as a celebration of the arts and a means to inspire both young and old.”

LUV will be competing against the following university choirs:

  • University of Southampton ACCF Choir Southampton
  • Canterbury Christchurch University Canterbury Christ Church Gospel Choir
  • Coventry University Coventry University Gospel Rhythms
  • DeMonfort University DMU Gospel Choir
  • DeMonfort University DMU Student Choir
  • Middlesex University MDX Gospel Choir
  • University of Portsmouth Portsmouth Gospel Choir
