University of Leicester hosts Global Careers Services Summit from 7 – 9 March

Issued by University of Leicester Press Office on 8 March 2016

The University of Leicester’s Career Development Service has partnered with the University of California, Berkeley’s Career Center to host an employability event that is the first of its kind.

Bob Athwal, Director of Student Experience at the University of Leicester and Tom Devlin, Executive Director of University of California, Berkeley’s Career Center first spoke informally about a Global Careers Services Summit in June 2015 at the NACE (National  Association of Colleges & Employers) Conference in Los Angeles.

Now the University of Leicester is co-hosting the pioneering, fully booked conference at College Court, Oadby from Monday 7th to Wednesday 9th March.

Over the three day summit, sponsored by The Smarty Train, Grad Connection, Enterprise rent-a-car and Nestle, a variety of presentations and workshops have attracted careers directors from across the Globe with delegates from Canada, US, Australia and Abu Dhabi.

Alongside leaders of university careers services, professionals from the UK & ROI will attend and deliver sessions on a range of areas. All the sessions will provide a platform to share best practices, and key themes include accountability within the careers profession, the global workforce of tomorrow, and new career centre models being applied by universities.

With topics ranging from careers service strategy, global employment, recruiting millennials and trends in student behaviour, the summit will also feature a global viewpoint by Professor Paul Boyle, President and Vice Chancellor of the University of Leicester.

Bob Athwal, Director of Student Experience at the University of Leicester, said: “Working with Tom Devlin to develop such an exciting event has been fantastic. This Summit has been a truly ambitious project and one that makes us proud as it will be attended by some of the very best Universities in the world.

“To be able to work alongside our peers to discuss some of the sector’s most pressing challenges globally and work together to come up with potential solutions is going to be so interesting and - above all else – an incredible experience. We are lucky here at the University of Leicester as the first hosts of such an event.”

This event follows the announcement last week that the University of Leicester was awarded ‘Best Preparation for Work Initiative (Higher Education) at the Association of Graduate Recruiters’ annual Development Awards.

This follows an award in 2015 in the ‘Best Preparation for Work: Overall Strategy’ category making Leicester the first University in the UK to consecutively win awards from the AGR.
