Issued by University of Leicester Press Office on 7 June 2016

  • The Leicester Weekend 2016 will take place between Friday 17 – Saturday 18 June

The University of Leicester is inviting its staff, students, alumni, family and friends and the local community to celebrate their biggest reunion to date – ‘The Leicester Weekend 2016’.

Taking place over three days (17-18 June), the weekend will provide attendees the opportunity to partake in an eclectic array of social activities, sport, workshops and networking for all ages, in addition to hearing about the University’s recent success stories.

The myriad of activities that the occasion boasts promises to appeal to all and organisers in the Development and Alumni Relations Office look forward to welcoming alumni, members of the community and friends of the University to its campus.

Chris Shaw, Assistant Director in the Development and Alumni Relations Office at the University of Leicester, said: “It really has been an incredible year for Leicester, and the University. On the campus alone we’ve had the grand opening of the Attenborough Arts Centre’s New Galleries Wing by Sir David Attenborough, the new Centre for Medicine is taking shape and of course Leicester City Football Club won the Premier League. The Leicester Weekend promises to be a really great reunion event giving alumni the chance to hear about what has been a fantastic year for the City, and the University.

“It’s also a great opportunity to catch up with old friends, as well as make new ones. This year we are also holding our first ever Quiz Night and Team Leicester Games as part of the weekend. We hope it will be a fun filled weekend for the whole family.”

The festivities, which are open to the public, kick off on Friday 17 June with a tour of the Richard III Visitor Centre in Leicester city centre and an exclusive chance to hear from Dr Turi King and the team who made the ground-breaking discovery. The fascination with the last Plantagenet King is so strong that this activity is already fully booked weeks before the event.

On Saturday 18 June the President and Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Paul Boyle CBE, will deliver a keynote lecture supported by other academics, entitled ‘The Buzz about Leicester’, which will include the recent success of Leicester City Football Club and the impact that winning the Premier League has had on the city, as well as the history of the University and its approaching Centenary.

Among the multitude of highlights there will be a ‘Departmental Showcase and Exhibition’, bringing the University’s recent academic and research accomplishments to the public’s attention along with various interactive activities for all. There will also be exclusive VIP screenings of the Sir David Attenborough lecture entitled ‘Beauty in Nature’, which was first delivered in January at De Montfort Hall, Leicester, as part of the University of Leicester’s Chancellor’s Distinguished Lecture series.

Workshops and activities dedicated towards children will also be on show including a ‘Children's Interactive Show’, ‘Teddy Bear Hospital’, rides, giant games and face-painters.

‘The Leicester Weekend 2016’ reunion will take place between Friday 17 – Saturday 18 June.
