Department of Media and Communication to launch new research cluster with free public event on Thursday 16 June

Issued by University of Leicester Press Office on 13 June 2016

Media Cultures, a new research initiative that explores the role of the media in our shared cultural lives, will hold its official launch at a free public event on Thursday 16 June between 4.00-6.30pm at Bankfield House, University of Leicester.

It will showcase some of the group’s latest cutting-edge research, as well as inviting dialogue on the role of media in areas of life as diverse as work, migration, fashion, development, and romance in post-disaster contexts.

The event will host two expert panels, special guest speakers and audience discussion – with food and a drinks reception to follow.

The first panel, featuring expert Margie Buchanan-Smith from the Overseas Development Institute, and Leicester academics Dr Jonathan Corpus Ong and Dr Maria Touri, will address the potential of the media to mend communities in the wake of humanitarian disasters and in moments of rupture.

The second panel, chaired by Professor Helen Wood and featuring Leicester academics Professor Mark Banks, Dr Jessica Bain, as well as international guest speakers Professor Vicki Mayer and Dr Kylie Jarrett, will explore the complex histories of work within the media and cultural industries, and will ask what is at stake in thinking about work now, in the future, and in the light of the past.

Media Cultures, which is organised by researchers from the University of Leicester’s Department of Media and Communication, focuses on national and international media and covers questions of access, opportunity, participation, development and social justice, offering new insights into the role of media in our shared cultural lives.

To register a place, please email Jilly Boyce Kay by Monday 13 June. All welcome.
