Two Leicester Tigers players will join the coaching team for the University of Leicester Men’s Rugby Union club during the 2016/17 season.

Following on from their success at this year’s Varsity match beating De Montfort University 34-0, Team Leicester is now looking to extend their unbeaten Varsity record to five years after appointing Lachlan McCaffrey and Matt Smith as coaches for the forthcoming season.

Both players are currently training with the rest of the Leicester Tigers on the University’s rugby pitches at Stoughton Road Playing Fields in Oadby.

Centre Matt Smith, who graduated from the Tigers Academy and made his Tigers debut in 2006, said: “It is a great privilege to be involved and become part of the University of Leicester's rugby team. Hopefully continuing and developing further the close relationship the University has with the Leicester Tigers.

“I look forward to meeting all the players and staff this season and am excited about passing on some knowledge and experience to the players!”

Paul Robbins, Team Leicester Sports Coordinator at the University of Leicester, said: “Not only does this further show the strength of our partnership with the Tigers but both coaches are also very reputable players. Matt Smith has been playing at Tigers for over 10 years now and Lachlan played Super Rugby, the most prestigious and reputable league in the Southern Hemisphere, before moving to Tigers in 2015.”

Students can join the Club by purchasing a silver or gold gym membership and a Rugby Union Club membership by visiting the Danielle Brown Sports Centre on campus or Roger Bettles Sports Centre in Oadby, or online from 1 September at:

Staff, associate, alumni and members of the public can also join if they have a gold gym membership and also pay the Club fee. However, staff aren’t eligible to play in competitive matches or Varsity because of BUCS league rules.
