The naturalist and long-running television personality Sir David Attenborough will be returning to the place of his Leicester childhood to open a new fully-inclusive gallery championed by his brother Lord Attenborough.

Sir David will officially open the new £1.5million gallery extension at Attenborough Arts Centre, the University’s inclusive, multi-use arts venue on Lancaster Road. Richard Attenborough was patron and a hands-on man who helped establish the arts centre.

MEDIA OPPORTUNITIES

Media are being invited to film/photograph Sir David Attenborough’s tour and opening of the new gallery wing of Attenborough Arts.

Media must arrive between 10am - 10.20am and report to Ather Mirza and Peter Thorley in the Attenborough Arts Centre. All media must wear press credentials at all times.

There are four opportunities for media:

  • 10.30am - Photographers and cameramen can follow Sir David Attenborough as he arrives and as they tour the new gallery and exhibition. Filming/photos only - no press questions until the following Q&A.
  • 10.50am – Sir David will give a 10-15 minute Q&A session with assembled media.
  • 11.05am – 11.50am – the News Centre will allocate time and create a rota for pre-registered broadcast media to conduct one-to-one interviews with Sir David. Register your attendance at pt91@le.ac.uk by midnight on Tuesday 26 January.
  • 12noon – Media can attend and record/photograph opening speeches by Professor Paul Boyle, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Leicester, and Sir David Attenborough, and the unveiling of a dedication plaque.

The artists Lucy and Jorge Orta will be available for media interviews to discuss the opening exhibition before and after the unveiling.

There are no other filming/photographic or interview opportunities available.

REGISTRATION

All media must register their attendance and wear press credentials at all times.  These should denote name and media organisation.  All media intending to send representatives to the gallery opening must email details of attendees and the media organisation they represent to the University press office: pt91@le.ac.uk by midnight on Tuesday 26 January.

You will be sent confirmation of your registration and each name will be checked against the register. Please note unregistered media will not be permitted to enter the gallery.

PARKING AND DIRECTIONS

Attenborough Arts is located adjacent to the University of Leicester on Lancaster Road.

Parking is available for pre-registered media at the Regent College car park, opposite Attenborough Arts on Lancaster Road, postcode is LE1 7HA. Media must apply for permits by midnight on Tuesday 26 January by e-mailing pt91@le.ac.uk.
