The Executive Director of the one of world's most successful Formula One teams, and the man behind Lewis Hamilton's race success, will be guest speaker at an annual University of Leicester engineering lecture.

Now in its 18th year, the annual event organised by the Department of Engineering will feature MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Executive Director (Technical) Paddy Lowe as its visiting speaker.

The Cambridge engineering graduate will talk about his career in one of the most demanding technical sports on the planet, and the breakthroughs developed in Formula One that have had a wider application in other industries.

Tickets to the lecture are free, but need to be booked in advance.

It takes place in the Peter Williams Lecture Theatre, on Thursday 11 February, at 6.30pm.

Professor Helen Atkinson, Head of the Department of Engineering, said: “We are really thrilled that Paddy Lowe FREng is coming to do the Annual Industry Lecture in Engineering this year.

“He has been right at the centre of the engineering which has underpinned Lewis Hamilton’s outstanding record in the Formula One World Championships.

“He joins a stellar cast of engineers who have given this lecture including Dame Ann Dowling FREng FRS, the President of the Royal Academy of Engineering, last year and Bob Joyce FREng, Main Board Director at Jaguar Land Rover (and an alumnus) the year before.”

Paddy Lowe has been Executive Director (Technical) at MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS since June 2013.

After graduating with an engineering degree from Sidney Sussex College, University of Cambridge in 1984, he has worked in various capacities in Formula One since 1987.

Under his technical stewardship, the Mercedes team had one of its most successful seasons last year, breaking numerous Formula One records.

In 2015 MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS broke the following historical records:

  • Highest percentage of available points scored in one season
  • Most number of 1st and 2nd place finishes in one season
  • Most podium positions in a season
  • Most qualifying front row lock outs (both drivers from the team on the front row of the grid for the start of the race)
  • Most consecutive qualifying front row lock outs

Career highlights include:

  • Winning the first race of the 1992 Formula One season with Nigel Mansell in Kyalami with pioneering active suspension and traction control systems
  • Standing on the podium in Sochi, 2014, having just won the World Constructors’ Championship with MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS and receiving the Winning Constructor’s trophy for the Russian Grand Prix.

A free buffet supper will be available after the lecture on the 1st Floor Restaurant, Charles Wilson Building.
