Her Imperial Highness Princess Mako of Akishino is a member of the Japanese Imperial Family. She is the eldest daughter of Their Imperial Highnesses Prince and Princess of Akishino and the first-born granddaughter of Their Majesties Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko.

She is graduating from the University of Leicester with a Master of Arts degree in Art Museum and Gallery Studies

She will be presented with her degree certificate by Chancellor of the University Lord Grocott at a ceremony in De Montfort  Hall on Thursday 21 January, starting at 11am. The ceremony will be streamed live:

Media opportunities: Thursday 21 January

Media are being invited to film/photograph the degree ceremony and the Princess processing and receiving her degree at De Montfort Hall, Leicester LE1 7RU.

Media are requested to only film and photograph the Princess as she processes to receive her degree and not while she is seated.

Media must arrive between 10am- 10.15am and meet Ather Mirza and Peter Thorley at the front of the De Montfort Hall. Both will be holding placards saying PRESS

All media must register their attendance and wear press credentials at all times.  These should denote name and media organisation.  All media intending to send representatives to the graduation ceremony must email details of attendees and the media organisation they represent to the University press office: by 12noon on Wednesday 20 January

You will be sent confirmation of your registration and each name will be checked against the register. Please note unregistered media will not be permitted to enter the hall

De Montfort Hall is located adjacent to the University of Leicester and Victoria Park on University Road/Granville Road. Parking is available for pre-registered media at the VIP car park next to the Hall.  Media must apply for the permits by 12noon on Wednesday 20th January by emailing

Access to the VIP car park is from University Road.

Media will be led to the upper galleries of the De Montfort Hall where they can assemble to take photographs and film.  Please note that these galleries provide an angled view which is the only facility available.

The degree ceremony starts at 11am and the estimated time for the Princess to process and receive her degree in between 11.20-11.30pm (approx.). After the Princess has processed and received her degree, she will return to her seat.  After she is seated, media will be required to leave the De Montfort Hall – that will be the end of the media opportunity.

There are no other filming/photographic opportunities and no interviews are available.
