Issued by the University of Leicester Press Office on Wednesday 30 September

A definitive table of world University rankings has seen the University of Leicester climb 32 places to 167 – placing Leicester firmly among the top 1 per cent of universities in the world.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2015-16 published on Wednesday reveals that Leicester ranks among the elite institutions globally.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings are the world’s most comprehensive and carefully calibrated global rankings, using several separate performance indicators to examine a university’s strengths against all of its core missions – teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

Dr Tracy Carlton, Acting Director of External Relations, said: “We are delighted that Leicester has once again been ranked in the top 200 of Higher Education institutions worldwide, placing us among the top 1% of universities. Leicester is also consistently ranked among the top quartile of universities in the UK and it is pleasing to see that we continue to be recognised among the country’s leading institutions.

“We have now announced our new strategic plan which has signalled a new direction for the University to pioneer a distinctive elite.  As a discovery-led university, we will be ever more focused on innovation. We will make a real difference: the excellence of our research, teaching and enterprise will transform people’s lives. By being more adventurous, more ambitious and more insistent on the value of our distinctive qualities, we will have an even greater impact upon global scholarship and education. In every area, we are already developing bold initiatives that put our university at the forefront of change.”

Phil Baty, editor of the THE World University Rankings, said: “The Times Higher Education World University Rankings, now in their 12th year, apply rigorous standards, using tough global benchmarks across all of a global research university’s key missions – teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. The results are trusted by students and their families, academics, university leaders and governments. For University of Leicester to make 167 in the world is an outstanding achievement to be celebrated.”

The University of Leicester was named runner-up University of the Year in the Times/Sunday Times University Guide 2014.  We are in the top 25 universities targeted by leading UK employers and Leicester is ranked in the top 25 universities in the Times Higher Education REF Research Power rankings. The Power ranking takes into account both the quality of research and the number of research-active staff who made REF returns. Research power is important because it gives a strong indication of a combination of world-class research, international impact, critical mass and sustainability.

75% of Leicester’s research was judged to be internationally excellent with wide-ranging impacts on society, health culture, and the environment. That Leicester also entered a substantial proportion of academics - 84% - to the REF demonstrates that its academics are continuing to develop and build upon its world-leading research.
