Children as young as two-years-old are being encouraged to learn about maths through a project led by the University of Leicester and involving local schools and nurseries.

Money and Maths is a free event in Leicester with an exhibition of games, role play and activities that can promote children’s understanding and skills when using money. It runs from now until Friday 25 September.

Dr Rose Griffiths from the University of Leicester School of Education said: “If you work or live with children aged 2-12 you will find something here to give you ideas.

“You are welcome to bring children with you to try things out.

"Understanding how to use money is a vital skill in everyday life. During our first week, I've watched two- and three-year-olds running our 'cafe', offering cups of tea to everyone who comes near, while older children try out games, organise a 'car show room' or think about why we have money at all."

The exhibition is being co-ordinated by Rose Griffiths from the University of Leicester, along with early years practitioners from many schools, nurseries and other settings, and has been funded by ‘Greater Than The Sum’, a co-operative organisation aiming to make maths more accessible to children and families in Leicester.

It takes place at: Leicester City, Pre-school Learning Alliance, Knighton Lane, Leicester LE2 8BE (next to Lansdowne Children’s Centre).

Opening times:

September 1-25:

Tuesdays, 2pm till 7pm

Wednesdays, Thursdays and

Fridays, 9.30am till 2pm

Saturdays, 9.30am till 2pm

If your school or setting would like to bring a group of children to visit the exhibition, please book in advance to make sure there is space: phone 0116 229 1994 or email leicesterbookings@pre-school.org.uk
