Dr John Reid, of the University of Aberdeen, to give free public talk on the history of telescopes for Leicester Physics Centre

Issued by University of Leicester Press Office on 6 October 2015

The telescope - ‘astronomy’s wonderful tool’ - will be the focus of a free public lecture at the University of Leicester on Thursday 8 October.

Dr John Reid, a former Head of the Department of Physics at the University of Aberdeen, will be presenting the lecture on the history of telescopes and will explore how instrument makers and astronomers developed telescopes over the centuries into some of the most sophisticated of all scientific tools.

From the very first devices developed over 400 years ago which were little more than a couple of lenses at either end of a cardboard tube to the performance of today’s instruments, telescopes continue to show how the twinkling light of the stars can reveal the complexity of the universe at large.

The University of Leicester has played its role in the development and design of telescopes and space instrumentation. Dr Gillian Butcher, of the Department of Physics and Astronomy, said: “Here at Leicester we have built and used telescopes of all kinds, in all parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, for astronomy, planetary science and Earth Observation. In particular we are world renowned for our x-ray astronomy telescopes, one of which, the Indian-led Astrosat mission, was launched the week before the lecture. Progress in areas such as astronomy go hand in hand with progress in technology, each pushing the other forward to improve on what has gone before.

“I would encourage anyone with an interest in astronomy, history, technology and telescopes to join us at this free lecture which is open to everyone.”

The event is part of the lecture series celebrating the International Year of Light 2015, hosted by the Leicester Physics Centre and sponsored by the East Midlands Branch of the Institute of Physics.

‘The Telescope: Astronomy’s Wonderful Tool’ by Dr John Reid is on Thursday 8 October at 6.30pm in the Ground Floor Lecture Theatre 2 of the Ken Edwards Building. It is free to attend. The talk will last about an hour and include time for questions.
