An inflatable assault course, back massages and cute fluffy animals are just some of the ways in which the University of Leicester’s Students' Union is helping students combat their exam stress this summer.

Students will also get the chance to bag themselves some freebies, including LUSH cosmetics, camomile tea, fresh fruit and exam-buster kits.

A gigantic inflatable assault course will be popping up on the University of Leicester’s campus to provide students with a fun break from revision from 11 – 14 May.

Back by popular demand, the petting zoo will return to Mayor’s Walk this year on Friday 15 May, bringing a variety of cute farm animals including ponies, sheep, goats, chickens and ducks for students to pet and hold.

Keeping up with the cute-factor, a number of guide dogs will be taking over the Student’s Union on Wednesday 20 May. For a small donation to Guide Dogs UK, students can pet the puppies and learn more about their work to take their minds of their exams.

A friendly squad of professional therapists will also be on hand to relieve all of the test tension with free, ten-minute back massages at pop-up ‘Relaxation Stations’ in The Square in the Students’ Union, on Wednesday 20 May and Wednesday 3 June.

These activities are part of a wider theme of support the University’s Students’ Union has in place for students during their exams, which also include:

  • Student food project ‘Hungry for Change’ will be handing out free camomile tea and fresh fruit as well as facilitating an egg and spoon race
  • LUSH will be giving away free samples, consultations and mini massages
  • 100 ‘golden’ tickets have been scattered in the Students’ Union offering free coffee and burgers
  • A farmers’ market on Tuesday 12 May will offer students a wealth of local produce including pies, cakes and ice-cream
  • Opening hours have been extended at the student bar and giant games have been supplied to help students enjoy a break from their revision and exams
  • A photo booth will give students the chance to leave their mark by sporting crazy props and striking silly poses in order to achieve the best #wemadeit selfies
  • A chilli-sowing session
  • Dedicated quiet spaces for revision on campus

Georgie Tansell, Sales and Marketing Manager at the Students’ Union, said: “This year we are providing a more diverse range of activities for students to ease exam stress, incorporating alternative therapies such as back and Indian head massage. We are thrilled to welcome back, by popular demand, favourites from last year such as the petting zoo and guide dogs. We wish all our students the best of luck for their exams and hope they enjoy their de-stress activity programme.”

Michael Rubin, President of Leicester Students’ Union, said: “This is the most important time of the year for our students, and we think it’s vital that we support them in as many ways as possible. We’ve got an exceptional team offering exam support, but countering stress with activities on campus between revision sessions is something our students love. This year our plans are bigger and better than ever!”

Alex Bugg, final year Biochemistry student, said: “During my time at uni we’ve had more and more treats from the SU when exam season swings round. The puppies are my personal highlight, but the little things like free fruit and tea will keep me going too. It’s also handy to have the additional revision space in the union.”
