Issued by University of Leicester Press Office on 11 June 2015

Graduates, staff, students and their families and friends will be at the University of Leicester on Saturday 27 June for a free day of social events, lectures, workshops and activities for all the family.

The Summer Reunion Open Day, which is open to the public, offers a great opportunity to celebrate and discover more about the work and achievements of the University of Leicester. One of the highlights of the day will be a series of events focusing on the 1960s, culminating in a ‘Swinging 60s’ night.

The event will give attendees the opportunity to hear from the President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Paul Boyle, who will present his Keynote Lecture ‘re-imagining of the University of Leicester’.

Other activities include a ‘Hard hat tour’ which will give visitors a chance to take a look inside the new £42 million Centre for Medicine which is currently under construction and there will be information about the exciting developments at the Attenborough Arts Centre, including plans for the New Galleries Wing.

An impressive 90 years of Chemistry at the University will be celebrated with a tour of the department, quiz, displays and demonstration lecture.

Chris Shaw, Assistant Director in the Development and Alumni Relations Office, said:  “The Summer Reunion Open Day 2015 offers alumni from the University of Leicester the chance to stay up to date with what’s happening, to meet up with old colleagues and friends, and for the first time this year, to get on the dance floor with a 1960s themed evening concert. It’s a fun filled day of education and enlightenment for the whole family.”

Chris added: “The 60s theme emerged following last year’s highly successful 1960s breakfast when graduates from the 1960s met up to recount stories about their time at what was then, Leicester University.  Dave Cousins from The Strawbs was there and his visit turned into a gig mid-year and the idea of a summer concert followed.”

During the day, visitors will also have the opportunity to hear lectures  showcasing new research at Leicester including ‘Fifty Years of Exploring Mars from Space’ from Professor of Planetary Science Dr John Bridges and ‘Revealing Grey Friars: the archaeology of Leicester’s Lost Franciscan Friary’ from Mathew Morris who directed excavations into the finding of Richard III. There will also be the chance to hear an update from Mathew on where the Richard III project is now.

Activities for children will be taking place, including a Children’s Lunchtime Interactive Show, a Teddy Bear Hospital where children are encouraged to bring their teddies, children’s rides, face-painting and a ‘Cool Chemists Make Ice Cream’ demo.

The day will conclude with the Swinging 60s themed night, which is open to everyone. The fun will continue in The Scholar Bar in the Students' Union, Percy Gee Building where there will be a Juke Box from 5pm onwards with live band, “Ken Oakley’s 60s Sound’s” playing from 7pm.
