Staff from the Department of Genetics at the University of Leicester will be performing at a charity gig in aid of Parkinson’s UK.

The Histones, who formed last year to celebrate the department’s 50th anniversary, will be appearing at the Shed in Leicester on Friday, June 26th.

Professor Flaviano Giorgini (Flav) plays guitar in the band and is no newcomer to the live music scene having played with popular US punk rock band Squirtgun.

Flav said: “This event stems from the Department of Genetics 50th Anniversary celebration we arranged last year.  As we really enjoyed playing in the band, we thought we would occasionally regroup to perform charity gigs and the Shed gig is the first of these.”

He said: “Parkinson’s UK was our selected charity for this gig as my laboratory does research on Parkinson’s disease, and we have been awarded grants from the charity.”

The band plays a mix of ska and soul songs and performing with  Flav will be Professor Mark Jobling on saxophone, Dr Richard Badge playing trumpet, with lead vocals from Dr Peter Causey-Freeman,  Dr Owen Lancaster on drums, Craig Bartle on bass and Diana Martin on keyboards.

Also playing on the night are Roboter, which includes Flav in its line-up, and Cocked n Loaded which features bassist Craig.  Solo acoustic singer songwriter Eliza Marriott will also be performing on the night.

The Department of Genetics’ Parkinson’s UK charity gig is on Friday 26th June at the The Shed, Yeoman Street, Leicester. Doors open at  8pm and the first act is on at 8.30pm.  Tickets are £6 advance and £7 on the door

They will also be holding a cake, jam and book sale in the Department on Wednesday 24th June.
