Former Universities and Science Minister the Rt. Hon. David Willetts is to deliver the inaugural Chancellor’s Lecture at the University of Leicester on Thursday 11 June.

The free lecture, which is also open to staff, students, graduates as well as the public, is entitled The Future of the UK Science Innovation System.  It starts at 6pm in the Peter Williams Lecture Theatre.

There is free parking available via the University Visitors’ Entrance on University Road.

University Chancellor Lord Grocott said: “I am very pleased that the inaugural lecture in this series is to be delivered by a former Parliamentarian and whose distinguished career included four years as Minister for Universities and Science.

“David is no stranger to the University- he opened a hi-tech space research facility in our Department of Physics and Astronomy in 2011 and he has praised the work of the University – including the discovery of Richard III and our path-breaking partnerships with institutions in Kurdistan.

“We look forward to his talk and hope as many people as possible are able to hear him speak at the University.”

The Rt. Hon. David Willetts

David Willetts served as the Member of Parliament for Havant from 1992 to March 2015. He has worked at HM Treasury, the Number 10 Policy Unit, and served as Paymaster General in the last Conservative Government. He has also previously served as the Shadow Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities & Skills, Shadow Secretary of State for Work & Pensions and for Trade & Industry.  From May 2010 to July 2014 David served as Minister for Universities and Science. He was appointed as a Privy Councillor in June 2010.

He is a Governor of the Ditchley Foundation, a member of the Council of the Institute for Fiscal Studies, a member of the Global Ageing Commission and a Visiting Professor at the Cass Business School and King’s College London. He has also joined the National Centre for Universities and Business (NCUB)  as a non-executive director.

David has written widely on economic and social policy. His latest book ‘The Pinch’ was published by Atlantic Books in 2010.

Lord Grocott

Distinguished Labour Life Peer the Rt. Hon. Lord Grocott is the sixth Chancellor of the University of Leicester.

A former student of the University of Leicester who has devoted his life to public service, he returned to the University as Chancellor - the first time that this has occurred in the history of the University. Bruce Grocott, who is also an Honorary Graduate of the University, was installed as Chancellor at a Degree Ceremony in January 2013. He succeeded Sir Peter Williams who stepped down in 2010 after five years of sterling service.
