University of Leicester course receives IAFIE certification for its strong educational standards

Issued by University of Leicester Press Office on 13 July 2015

A course giving students a breadth of knowledge in intelligence and security has received an international accolade.

The Distance Learning MA in Intelligence and Security at the University of Leicester has received certification from the International Association for Intelligence Education (IAFIE), an international organisation dedicated to expanding research, knowledge and professional development in intelligence education.

The course is the first in Britain to receive IAFIE certification, and only the second worldwide. IAFIE requires programs to meet strong educational standards in order to receive certification.

In a letter informing the University of the certification, IAFIE said “You should be proud of this professional achievement”, going on to describe the course as “well designed” with “clearly articulated objectives”.

The course, which is taught over two years by distance learning, equips students with an understanding of key concepts and debates in relation to intelligence and security and the current state of knowledge in the field.

It combines world leading research by members of the Department of Politics and International Relations, and their experience in the field of intelligence. It gives students the opportunity to conduct advanced study on intelligence theory and practice.

The course can enhance the employability of those seeking to work in intelligence with the government, military, police, private security sector, the UN or other international organizations.

Dr David Strachan-Morris, course leader and Lecturer in Intelligence and Security at the University of Leicester, said: “This is a very prestigious award for us and we are extremely pleased to have had the quality of the course recognised at an international level.”

IAFIE is the leading international organisation for Intelligence Education with members from educational institutions and intelligence agencies worldwide. The group was originally formed by more than 60 intelligence studies trainers from a variety of intelligence disciplines including national security, law enforcement and competitive intelligence.

The mission of the organisation is to advance research, knowledge and professional development in intelligence education.

The distance learning Intelligence and Security (MA) course enrols in September and March.

Enrolment for September 2015 is currently available.
