The University of Leicester campus was transformed into a winter wonderland on Tuesday 1 December as part of the Students’ Union’s 12 Days of Christmas campaign.

For one day only, an ice rink took pride of place in the centre of the University’s campus and was surrounded by a festive Christmas market offering a variety of local produce, bottle bar selling locally produced ciders and ales and even a Santa’s Grotto- in aid of charity, Child Reach.

Students, staff and members of the public were able to get their skates on for 30 minute sessions, while taking in the festive music and Christmas scenes, lit up with thousands of twinkly fairy lights.

Jim Butler, the University of Leicester’s Head of Corporate Events said: “I believe that Christmas is about bringing people together and by supporting the Christmas Market with the addition of the ice rink and the festively decorated trees we were able to help create a real sense of community on campus.

“It also enabled us to share some festive cheer with our neighbouring communities and it was fantastic to see students and staff skating and laughing alongside local families and children.”

The event kick-started the Students’ Union’s Christmas campaign which runs until 12 December and features a whole host of festive freebies and activities, including:

  • Christmas-inspired film days
  • Craft fair and vintage record stand
  • Giveaways including festive Starbucks drinks, pizza and bagels
  • Santa Fun Run around Victoria Park
  • Christmas carols, mulled wine and mince pies
  • Christmas card and wreath-making workshops
  • Christmas cook-off
  • Theatre events at The Curve

Georgie Tansell, Marketing, Sales & Events Manager at the Students’ Union said: "We have really expanded our festive events line up this year, working in partnership with the University and Enactus to create a real 'Festive buzz' on campus; a great way to end the first term.

“We are hoping there will be something for everyone to enjoy and experience over the next 12 days. It is always a real pleasure to work with local independent Leicestershire businesses, and that paired with an ice rink and the Enactus Christmas Market, was a perfect way to launch the festive period and the 12 days of Christmas campaign on campus."

The Students’ Union resident Guide Dog puppy, Vinnie, was also at the launch of a new Guide Dog calendar, featuring Vinnie himself and two of his puppy friends on Wednesday 2 December at Queen’s Hall Foyer.

The calendar will be available for purchase from The Point in the Students’ Union from Thursday 3 December until stocks last. All proceeds from the sale of the calendar will go to Guide Dogs UK.
