University of Leicester students perform at Edinburgh Festival Fringe between 17-23 August

Issued by the University of Leicester Press Office on 12 August

Vatican murder mystery comedy Cardinal Sin, which has been produced by five young writers from the University of Leicester, will be finding its way to the stage at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe between 17 and 23 August.

Cardinal Sin is produced by student Callum Humphreys and directed by Benjamin Alborough along with three other playwrights from the University of Leicester who have leant their hands to making a surreal Catholic comedy.

Cardinal Sin blends Catholicism, bees and the Wu-Tang clan into an hour-long comedy romp through the Sistine Chapel – where a murder has taken place in the Papal Conclave and it’s up to those already there to solve it.

Delving into the dark world of papal intrigue and mystery, the show opens with the announcement of the Pope's death, and a new Pope must be elected. Cardinal Lovely is the most popular candidate, however, when he is announced as Pope, his dead body is discovered.  Quickly realising that the murderer must be among them because nobody can leave or enter the conclave until a new Pope is announced, characters Kris and Marlene lead the investigation in trying to solve Lovely's murder.

Callum said: “We didn't send a show to the Edinburgh Fringe last year, so we were determined to send a show this year. A group of experienced writers within the University got together and bounced around ideas for the script, and we eventually came up with Cardinal Sin from the idea that once you enter a conclave, you can’t leave until there’s a Pope. This seemed to go hand in hand with murder mystery.”

Benjamin added: “We wanted to do something different; it’s not stand-up but it’s not quite a play either. It’s more of a narrative comedy with theatrical sensibilities. We’re also desperate to challenge the idea that student comedy is rubbish - so we’re not doing sketches, we’re having proper actors come in and we’re making sure the material is thoroughly tested before it’s put on.”

Cardinal Sin will be at Sweet Grassmarket (Venue 18) International 1, from 17 – 23 August at 3:15pm until 4:05pm and tickets are free.
