The Leicester Regatta 2015 promises to be the city’s biggest and most impressive rowing race yet, with more than 500 competitors travelling from clubs nationwide to take part in the regatta on Sunday 26th April, which, for many, marks the highly anticipated start to summer racing.

The competitors of Leicester Regatta 2015 will be spread across more than 40 events, ranging from lone scullers in their single boats to the larger boats of eight.

Each crew will take to the water to battle it out for the title of their event, and with such an enormous influx of entries, this year’s regatta will undoubtedly be more exciting than ever.

“The response we’ve had from clubs across the country has been absolutely astounding,” says Liz Pulford, President of Leicester Rowing Club. “We were forced to close the entries early this year because we had such a massive number of crews applying to race in Leicester. It’s incredible how popular an event our regatta has become.”

This impressive number of competitors will only be exaggerated by the small size of the racing course, which takes place on the dead-straight 700 metre stretch of river, and adds to the exhilaration of the competition.

“The distance of our racing course is short, compared to some,” says Rob Fox, Captain of Leicester Rowing Club. “This means that it’s a flat-out sprint for everyone, and in many cases it’s an incredible head-to-head race the whole way. This makes it brilliant to watch, but even better to race in.”

Following the renowned Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race televised earlier this year, anticipation for the regatta is also heightened by the University Boat race, an annual event between De Montfort University Rowing Club and the University of Leicester Boat Club, taking place at 12.30pm. In teams of eight, containing each University’s top men and women, these two clubs will launch their long-standing rivalry onto the water and fight to be crowned the champions of 2015.

Visitors are encouraged to attend and experience the thrill of the racing with a view from the river’s tow-path, and, of course, cheer on their favourite crews. Rowers of an impressively wide range of ages and abilities will be attending, giving the regatta an intensely exciting but friendly atmosphere.

“Our competitors range from those as young as 13 years old, who have never raced before, and are just starting out on their rowing careers, to rowers who have set their sights on trials for the Great Britain national squad. We even have some exceptional veteran rowers who have competed internationally” said Liz Pulford. “We welcome everyone to come and enjoy our sport and take part in the excitement of the day.”

As is tradition, refreshments will be served in the club’s Boat House all day, and free parking has kindly been provided in Car Park C by Leicester City Football Club. The Regatta is a free event and racing will take place between 9am-5.30pm between Castle Gardens and the Leicester City Football ground.
