Award-winning author and playwright Edna O’Brien will be discussing the craft of writing at the University of Leicester’s free public 4th Annual Creative Writing Lecture on Thursday 7 May, taking place at 6:00pm in the Rattray Lecture Theatre.

During the lecture, entitled ‘A Writer’s Life’, she will speak about her experiences as a writer, the lives of some of the authors she most admires and what she feels the craft of writing entails.

Dr Harry Whitehead, Senior Tutor for Creative Writing in the University of Leicester’s School of English, who organised the event, said: “I am so excited that Edna O’Brien has agreed to deliver this year’s Annual Creative Writing Lecture. Among the world’s most respected living authors, she is also a fantastic speaker: generous, insightful, honest and witty.

“As a multiple award-winning writer of everything from biography to theatre, memoir to fiction, and one of the most important Irish authors of the past sixty years - in an impressive list - she is the perfect person to deliver the lecture. I am so looking forward to her insights into the writing craft.”

Edna is an award-winning author, playwright, poet, biographer and memoirist and has played a leading role in developing a voice for women in Ireland since her first novel, The Country Girls, appeared in 1960.

Among her many awards, she has won the Irish PEN Award in 2001, the European Prize for Literature in 1995 and the Bob Hughes Lifetime Achievement Award in Irish Literature in 2009.

Her recent memoir, Country Girl, attracted widespread critical praise and won the Irish Book Award for Non-Fiction 2012.

The lecture is hosted by the University of Leicester’s School of English, the Centre for New Writing and Literary Leicester.

The lecture has been made possible through a kind donation by Santander Universities.

The University of Leicester’s 4th Annual Creative Writing Lecture ‘A Writer’s Life’ takes place on Thursday 7 May between 6:00 – 7:30pm in the Rattray Lecture Theatre. It is free and open to the public.
