A team of University of Leicester students will be competing in BBC2’s University Challenge, 50 years after Leicester won the very first series of the long-running quiz programme and for the first time since 2005.

The members of the team were revealed on BBC2’s Class of 2014 in July, in which teams from universities across the UK discovered whether they had earned one of the 28 coveted places on the latest series.

Leicester’s team consists of Nidal Masri (BA in History), Robert Greenhill (BA in Humanities and Arts) Archie Barrow (BA in European Studies), Jon O'Doherty (MBChB in Medicine) and Adam Brown (working towards a PhD in Mechanical Engineering).

University Challenge is an academic quiz show where teams from different UK universities answer questions on all manner of subjects. The show’s host since 1994 has been the formidable figure of Jeremy Paxman.

Captain Robert Greenhill said: “Class of 2014 showed that getting onto University Challenge is no picnic. I’m proud of how hard the team have worked, and I know we won’t let Leicester down. We’re ready to take on the best, our team spirit is outstanding – and we also have great legs!”

Intern Andy Bates, who organised Leicester’s bid this year, said: "University Challenge is the pinnacle in quizzing and I am really excited for the series to get underway to showcase the talents of this brilliant team.”

Michael Rubin, Students’ Union President said: “A huge congratulations to the Leicester University Challenge team – their achievement in qualifying for the TV stage of the show for the first time in a decade is fantastic, and is a testament to all the hard work and many hours of practice they put in. Everyone at the University of Leicester Students’ Union is incredibly proud of them!”

A team from the University of Leicester was the winner of the very first series of University Challenge, broadcast in 1963. Leicester has appeared 3 times during the Paxman era and the University’s last appearance was in 2005.

The new series of University Challenge is currently airing on BBC Two and the University of Leicester’s first match is on Monday 15 September.
