Leading researchers share insights for the Industry and Parliament Trust

Issued by University of Leicester Press Office on 28 October 2014

Academics from the University of Leicester are due to present their research in Parliament for the Industry and Parliament Trust (IPT) between October and December this year.

A wide range of topics is on the agenda, from employment to cancer treatment, and forensics to sustainability.

Those currently scheduled to present include Professor Andy Abbott from the Department of Chemistry, Professor Adam Cygan from the School of Law, as well as other colleagues from Geology and Chemistry.

Previous presenters have discussed the future of international finance, employment relations and the recession, and a joined up approach to cancer treatment.

Professor Andy Abbott, who is presenting on 29 October, said: “In the Department of Chemistry we use a variety of mechanisms to foster our interactions with industry and enable successful implementation of research to achieve impact. We have a series of demonstrator units which allow industry to use pilot scale facilities and interact with researchers. A team of Enterprise Fellows deliver support on a range of business defined collaborative projects.”

Professor Adam Cygan, who presents on 30 October, said: “The important issue which the presentation will address is that Parliament has a role to play in shaping EU policy and legislation through its scrutiny activities, as well pursuing an agenda of improved legislative legitimacy by holding to account those EU institutions which are at the forefront of the legislative process.

“As the debate about the UK’s future relationship with the EU intensifies, the audience should appreciate that citizens and the industry community have a real opportunity, through maintaining strong links with Parliament, to shape the EU’s policy and legislative agenda.”

The IPT is an independent charity that provides a platform for Parliament and UK businesses to engage with one another. It aims to engage, educate and inform in order to create lasting relationships and facilitate the exchange of ideas.

Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research, Professor Kevin Schürer said: “The need to communicate research outcomes effectively to non-academic audiences, as well as to apply research as appropriate in policy, cultural, societal and economic terms, is increasingly important.

“In this regard the IPT provides an excellent forum and opportunity to facilitate this by bringing key individuals from the worlds of industry and policy-making together with leading researchers.”
