The lead singer of British folk-rock band The Strawbs will be returning to the University of Leicester later this month for an intimate gig and book signing.

Mathematics graduate Dave Cousins who studied at the University in the 1960s, is set to reignite his music magic at the place where it all began as he plays hits old and new during the performance on Thursday 27 November at The Scholar Bar from 7pm.

Best known for their hit Part of the Union which reached number two in the UK charts in 1973, The Strawbs were founded in 1964 and had successful tours across Europe, the USA and Canada during their heyday and Dave has been writing and recording music almost constantly since he graduated from the University in the 1960s. During his time at Leicester, Dave was heavily involved in music alongside his studies as President of the Folk society, organiser of the Jazz Cellar and regularly tutored fellow students on guitar.

Dave said: “It’s a real trip down memory lane to be going back to play in that same student bar.”

Dave will also be signing copies of his new autobiography Exorcising Ghosts: Strawbs & Other Lives during the evening. In the revealing memoir, Dave speaks frankly and openly about his time as frontman for the enigmatic band.

The explosive book lifts the lid on the highs and lows of Dave’s celebrated 50-year music career, charting his journey from a working-class West London boy to a sell-out musician. It also documents his remarkable and little-known parallel career in radio.

Event Organiser, Rosie O’Connor added: “I am really excited for Dave’s gig as I know he will be bringing the 1960s spirit back to campus for the evening which promises to be a lot of fun. Dave has had a fantastic career since his time here at Leicester and it is great that he has chosen to return to the University to share with us his success.”

Dave will be playing his homecoming gig at the Scholar Bar, Students’ Union, University of Leicester on Thursday 27 November from 7pm. The event is free and open to the public. Please RSVP to Rosie O’Connor at if you wish to attend.
