A dramatic photographic exhibition charting stories of migration will be open at the University of Leicester and locations across Leicester from Monday 23 June through to 13 February 2015.

The exhibition, created by a team from the University’s School of Museum Studies and the Migration Museum Project, is housed in the School of Museum Studies on University Road, near the junction with London Road, will also include a number of offsite exhibition displays at Leicester Railway Station (23 June – 20 July 2014), and on the campus of the University of Leicester including the Charles Wilson Building (21 July 2014 – 13 February 2015).

The exhibition will feature a selection of photographs from the Migration Museum Project.  Moreover, the exhibition uses state-of-the art digital technology including “digital kiosks” with interviews and videos, located throughout the exhibition to enable visitors to learn more about the photographs, stories and different perspectives on migration.

The exhibition and offsite exhibition displays are enhanced by augmented reality mobile app Blippar. Using the Blippar app on their mobile devices, visitors will be able to access – free of charge - additional film material and related information through augmented reality.

The use of augmented reality and ‘digital kiosks’ will allow visitors to explore and pose questions around the ways in which migration affects us all.

University of Leicester School of Museum Studies Professor Richard Sandell states, “100 Stories has been an enormously valuable opportunity to experiment with new approaches to making exhibitions and engaging the public in debate around an important issue.”

Exhibition Curator, Sarah Plumb, from the University of Leicester, adds, “100 Stories of Migration is a timely and important exhibition presenting diverse stories and journeys of migration. Included in the exhibition are several stories of migration to Leicester, told through striking images by Leicester-based photographer Kajal Nisha Patel. We hope that lots of people from local communities visit the exhibition to learn more about Britain's rich history of migration.”

Commenting on the partnership between the University of Leicester School of Museum Studies and the Migration Museum Project, Sophie Henderson, the Director of the Migration Museum Project said: "Our partnership with the University of Leicester School of Museum Studies is hugely exciting.

“100 Stories of Migration is an engaging and moving exhibition which speaks to all of us, one way or another. The team at Leicester has given the exhibition - originally shown at Hackney Museum in London - a digital makeover and curated it with new breadth and depth, as well as giving it a local emphasis.

“The Migration Museum Project is engaged in a number of collaborative partnerships across the country that aim to build Britain’s migration story, and we very much look forward to working further with the inspiring team at the University of Leicester to make the Migration Museum a reality.”

“100 Stories of Migration grew out of a photography competition led by the Migration Museum Project with The Guardian in 2011. They received over 700 submissions, from both professional and amateur photographers, when they asked the public for images of migration to the UK and a brief explanation of what migration meant to them. In the summer of 2013 just over 100 photographs were selected to be shown in an exhibition at Hackney Museum.”
