Issued by University of Leicester Press Office on 22 January 2014

Critically acclaimed actor Mat Fraser will be bringing a ‘Cabinet of Curiosities’ to the University of Leicester on Thursday 23 January at 8:00pm onwards – and will take the audience on a journey through the history of disability.

The public event, which will take place at the University’s Embrace Arts Centre, will see Fraser perform an intriguing and emotionally challenging live act using museum objects and a blend of drama, comedy, cabaret, film and music hall pastiche.

Professor Richard Sandell from the School of Museum Studies said: “The performance is an extraordinary combination of ideas and emotions; history, research and personal testimony.”

Fraser uses inspiration from the objects, specimens, photographs and papers from the Hunterian Museum at the Royal College of Surgeons, Royal College of Physicians and the Science Museum to explore how present day perceptions of disability have been shaped.

As the University of Leicester’s arts centre, Embrace Arts offers opportunities to everyone to participate without barriers in ways that challenge and inspire. Its welcoming 120-seat performance area, dance and art studios, gallery and bright foyer space enable people to engage with the arts as audiences, performers and learners.

‘Cabinet of Curiosities’ will be performed on Thursday 23 January at 8:00pm at Embrace Arts, Richard Attenborough Centre, Lancaster Road. The performance will be signed.

Tickets are £8 each, £6 for concessions, and free places are available for companions accompanying an audience member with a disability. To book, visit www.embracearts.co.uk or call the box office on 0116 252 2455.
