Issued by University of Leicester Press Office on 14 April 2014

Green-fingered gardeners are invited to bring the whole family along to the University of Leicester’s Botanic Garden to mark the 2014 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) National Gardening Week between Monday 14 – Sunday 20 April, where a series of gardening events will be taking place.

The horticultural activities will include:

  • Thursday 17 April: 11:00am-3:00pm - Family activity: Make a "cress-head"
Drop-in gardening activity for 3yrs upwards, this activity is designed to make gardening fun. Children can design a character using seeds and compost at the Botanic Garden and take it home. When the seeds grow the character changes.
No booking - small charge for materials.
  • Friday 18 April - Sunday 20 April: 2:00pm – 4:00pm - Guides in the Garden

Guides will be available to greet members of the public and share their knowledge of the Garden on three afternoons over Easter weekend. Botanic Garden guides will be available to greet visitors, chat, and informally share their favourite parts of the Garden by offering information and advice.

  • Sunday 20 April: 10:00am – 4:00pm – Spring Plant Sale (with refreshments)

Specialist nurseries will be selling a wide range of their own plants for every aspect of gardening interest. These plants are raised and sold by knowledgeable experts and they are a good source for unusual varieties and high-quality plants.

A spokesperson for the Botanic Garden said: “This is the time of year when people start to think about their own gardens and to enjoy visiting others. The Botanic Garden is an inspiring and informative for gardening enthusiasts, and a beautiful place to visit and enjoy the arrival of Spring.”

National Gardening Week was launched three years ago by the RHS and since then has grown into the country’s biggest celebration of gardening. Thousands of people, gardens, charities, retailers, culture and heritage organisations and groups get involved to enjoy gardening and the green spaces, neighbourhoods and communities that benefit from it.

The Botanic Garden is noted for the diversity of its plant collections and its landscapes, including woodland & herbaceous borders, water, rock and herb gardens, a restored Edwardian garden and its National Collections, making it a unique venue in the Midlands region.

The Royal Horticultural Society National Gardening Week at the University of Leicester’s Botanic Garden takes place between 14 – 20 April.
