Two forensic researchers from the University of Leicester, Dr. John Bond and Dr. Lisa Smith, have been invited by the Chinese Government to attend a conference on on forensic research and technology at the Zhejiang Police College in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, in Eastern China.

Dr. John Bond was invited to the three day conference, from September 28-30, titled ‘New Technologies in Forensic Science’, to speak about his work at Leicester enhancing fingerprint evidence on difficult surfaces.

He was invited by Zhejiang Police College’s Professor Xiaochun, who was keen to extend the invitation to other Leicester academics who are heavily involved in forensic research, such as Dr. Lisa Smith.

Their invitation arose following Dr John Bond’s previous visit to China, which was also at the invitation of the Chinese Government, in 2010.

There, he met Professor Xiaochun, who wanted to share the research being generated at Leicester with her Police College colleagues. Professor Xiaochun had already translated some of their research into Mandarin for the benefit of her colleagues.

Demonstrating the forensic technology will potentially benefit the University. This is because some of the technology discussed in the lecture is licensed by the University to Consolite Forensics, who have already sold equipment onto the Chinese forensic market.

Another indicator that forensic science research at the University of Leicester is held in international esteem is that the academics’ costs will be paid for by the Chinese Government’s Ministry of Public Security.

Prof Zheng said: "It is a great honour to have world famous Leicester forensic experts John Bond and Lisa Smith with us and to give a wonderful speech to our students and forensic scientists from all over the province.

“We sincerely hope that more mutual exchanges between Zhejiang Police College and University of Leicester will be promoted and extensive co-operation between us enhanced through this conference."

John Bond, of the Department of Chemistry, expressed his gratitude: "I am honoured to be asked to return to China to promote further the ground breaking forensic science research we undertake at Leicester.

“I met Prof Xiaochun on my last visit and I very much hope that this visit will lead to a long lasting co-operation between our two institutions.”

Lisa Smith, of the Department of Criminology, added: “We are delighted to be invited to the conference hosted by the Zhejiang Police College, and we look forward to sharing UK forensic research and technology with the delegates as well as learning from forensic experts and police in China.

“This is a great opportunity to strengthen international research and teaching links, and support new collaborations between the University of Leicester and the Zhejiang Police College.”
