The University of Leicester has been selected as one of the foremost universities in Britain in the first ever joint Times/Sunday Times Good University Guide 2014- securing the accolade of University of the Year runner-up.

The University of Leicester also climbed to 14th place out of over 120 institutions in the Times/Sunday Times – up from 17th last year in The Times.

The University of Leicester is ranked 13th out of 119 institutions in The Guardian and in the top 2% of universities in the world by the QS World University Rankings,  Taiwan World University Rankings and THE World University Rankings.

Commenting on Leicester’s success, the judges of The Times/Sunday Times Guide state: “Leicester takes the crown in the East Midlands for its performance in The Times and The Sunday Times University Guide 2014 league table. Ranked 14th nationally, the university has had a remarkable year – the highlight being when its archaeologists discovered Richard III buried under a car park in the city. Archaeology is one of a number subjects in which the institution excels. It is in or just outside the top ten nationally for staffing levels and spending on facilities as well as producing consistently high scores in the National Student Survey. All of which has helped move it up the league table by three places in the last year and secure it the runners-up spot in The Times and The Sunday Times University of the Year Award. Leicester is in the throes of a £1bn development programme to take it up to the next level.”

Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Robert Burgess said: “It is a terrific accolade to be selected as one of the foremost universities in Britain in the first ever joint Times/Sunday Times University Guide.

“This has been a year of remarkable successes for the University – during the year the University achieved global attention for the discovery and identification of King Richard III and, in our Department of Physics and Astronomy, our researchers have been involved with the NASA Mars rover Curiosity mission.

“This accolade is a fitting tribute to the hard work and dedication of all of our staff, students, sponsors and supporters.”

In 2007, the University of Leicester was shortlisted for the title of Sunday Times University of the Year and in 2008 the University won the title of Times Higher University of the Year.

The Times and The Sunday Times have produced acclaimed, but separate, university guides since 1993 and 1998 respectively. This year, the new, combined Good University Guide will provide the most comprehensive guide to higher education in Britain in print and digital formats across The Times and The Sunday Times.
