Following a £10 million investment in new and improved sports facilities, the University of Leicester has announced that its sports centres, on campus and on Manor Road, Oadby, are set to be officially named and opened.

The official opening for The Roger Bettles Sports Centre and The Danielle Brown Sports Centre will take place on Thursday 19 September. The buildings will be named and opened by Lord Grocott, Chancellor of the University of Leicester.

Lord Grocott said: “These superb facilities, as well as being of great benefit to all who use them, are yet further evidence of the continuing development and success of the University."

Having recently seen major improvements following a £5 million investment, the Roger Bettles Sports Centre on Manor Road, Oadby, now includes a 25m pool, sauna and steam rooms, and a 600m2 gym and aerobics studio.

Mr Bettles was born in Leicester and was elected Chair of the University Council between 2007-2013.

He said: “I was very honoured to serve and later to Chair the University Council for 15 years, and now consider it a huge honour for the University Sports Centre on Manor Road to bear my name. I am especially pleased to share the day of officially opening both the University Sports Centres with Danielle Brown whose name will be placed on the Main Campus Centre; she has earned this honour through her sporting prowess whereas my own sporting background is much more modest with Colours for Rugby Football at Wyggeston Boys` School more than 55 years ago!

“I am very thrilled to think of the thousands of students  who will enjoy these new facilities, maybe to emerge as successful athletes in the future; maybe simply to benefit by keeping fit and enjoying their chosen sports.”

The Danielle Brown Sports Centre on University Road features a 20m pool, sauna and steam room, as well as cardiovascular gym and a double size sports hall.

Ms Brown, who studied law at the University, won her second successive Paralympic games archery gold medal in 2012. She also received the Alumni of the Year award from well-known broadcaster Sir Terry Wogan.

She was bestowed an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from the University of Leicester in 2013.

She said: “I am absolutely delighted to have my name attached to such a fantastic centre. Training while studying can be very challenging; having the best facilities and a University which understands the value of sport makes all the difference."

The official openings follow the University’s announcement of an array of sports scholarships and appointment of a community sports development officer.

Professor Sir Robert Burgess, Vice-Chancellor, said “We are delighted to be able to officially open and name the University’s splendid new sports facilities after two highly deserving individuals and supporters of the University.”

In addition, the University recently became part of the Department of Health’s £10 million programme for the East Midlands, to form the country’s first ever National Sports and Exercise Medicine Centre of Excellence.
