Representatives from the University of Leicester Students’ Union, supported by the University of Leicester and the national mental health organisation Time to Change will come together for World Mental Health Day on Thursday 10 October 2013 to make a mental health pledge.

The pledge is part of the growing dedication of the University of Leicester and the Students’ Union in raising awareness about mental health issues and mobilizing positive change.

World Mental Health Day raises public awareness about mental health issues by encouraging open discussion about mental health and promoting investments in services that prevent and treat mental health conditions.

A representative of the Students’ Union said: “With one in four of us likely to experience a mental health condition in any given year, the University of Leicester Students’ Union is proud to support this campaign to challenge the discrimination and prejudice that for many can prove an even bigger burden than the illness itself.”

Other organisations that have made the mental health pledge are The Premier League, Channel 4, Comic Relief, National Union of Students, Department of Health, University of Manchester, Newcastle University, Oxford University Student Union, Goldsmiths College, University of Sussex, University of West England and many more.

Veronica Moore, Interim Head of Counselling and Wellbeing at the University of Leicester, said: “Mental health issues are ever present, yet there persists a great deal of stigma and discrimination around mental health which can prevent people from talking about their experience and getting the support they need at an early stage.

“Our celebration of World Mental Health Day aims to get people talking and sharing strategies in order to normalise experiences for both students and staff.”

The pledge will be signed at 2pm, Thursday 10 October at Percy Gee Square on the University of Leicester campus. The event is open to the public, and people are welcome to offer their support to World Mental Health Day by coming to witness the pledge being signed.
