Provost Derek Hole Annual Lecture to be hosted at University of Leicester on Wednesday 23 October

Issued by University of Leicester Press Office on 16 October 2013

The Bishop of Leicester, The Right Reverend Tim Stevens, is to discuss ‘Public Faith and Social Revolution’ at a free public lecture at the University of Leicester.

He will present the latest Provost Derek Hole Annual Lecture at the University of Leicester. It will take place in the Rattray Lecture Theatre on Wednesday 23 October at 5:30pm and is free and open to the public.

The Lecture, entitled “Public Faith and Social Revolution – is religion always an obstacle to change in a secular State?” will debate how religion can adapt to the issues facing the modern world.

There is an increasing expectation directed at churches and faith communities to engage with change without compromising historic teaching and long established values. Profound challenges of changing attitudes, social needs, credit injustice and gross differentiation of income all present challenges to faith institutions. The Lecture will contemplate whether faith must always oppose change, or if it can be a catalyst for a new society.

The Bishop has a particular interest in the benefits of interfaith relations in helping to create a better society for all. The City of Leicester has the largest Hindu population in the United Kingdom as well as substantial Muslim, Sikh and other faith communities. Both at diocesan and at national level the Bishop is involved in finding ways of working with other faiths on regeneration issues in cities.

The Bishop said: “I hope that all who are interested in economic, political and social change in a religiously diverse city such as Leicester will find this Lecture a challenge to established thinking and that it raises questions for our faith communities.”

Previously, the Bishop has presented lectures at the University on a broad range of topics, including the 2006 Leicester Alumni Association and Haldane Society Lecture “Religion: The Root of All Evil or Moral Guide?”

Provost Derek Hole said: “I am delighted that the Bishop is giving his Lecture this year. I feel that it is an interesting and relevant subject for Leicester at this time.”

The Lecture will take place in the Rattray Lecture Theatre on Wednesday 23 October 2013, starting at 5.30pm. Entry is free and open to all. A reception will follow at 6.30pm in the Park Side Lounge on the first floor of the Charles Wilson building.
