Astonishing archaeological discovery by the University of Leicester marked by Society for Intercultural Understanding: Leicester (SICUL) and the Cultural Section of the American Embassy in London

Issued by University of Leicester Press Office on 15 October 2013

EVENT ON FRIDAY 18 OCTOBER FROM 6PM-9PM AT ST MARTIN’S HOUSE, LEICESTER, LE1 5PZ

A former adult education tutor at the University of Leicester is spearheading a celebration of the discovery of Richard III with a Festival of American-Brazilian music!

Asaf Hussain, ran courses at the University of Leicester and is Chairperson of the Society for Intercultural Understanding: Leicester (SICUL).

SICUL is celebrating the unearthing of Richard III in Leicester—with an ‘American Festival for Glorification of Richard III’. There will be food, music and dancing—with a little bit of history from Richard Buckley, the University of Leicester’s Lead Archaeologist at the Grey Friars dig—and proceeds from the evening will be divided between St. Martin’s House, Leicester, and Hope Against Cancer.

Music for the evening will come from the American Embassy-sponsored band MATUTO, whose American Brazilian themed music, as Mr Hussain said, “got everyone dancing” at a celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee last year. This will follow an introduction from Mr Hussain, as well as talks from University of Leicester staff—including Richard Buckley.

“We want this to a great celebration of the finding of Richard III, and all the layers of archaeology making up Leicester,” said Mr Hussain. “It is also a lively celebration, with everyone having fun and enjoying good food while learning about the story of Richard III. And, most importantly, it will be for good causes.

“Everyone keeps wondering why we want an American band for the event. But that’s one of the amazing things about the story of Richard III—everyone gets excited about it! There is huge interest in the King and the dig in America, and dozens of groups were all thrilled about the excavations last year, and the identification of the remains.”

The evening will take place on Friday 18 October 2013 starting at 6.00pm, when Mr Hussain will welcome guests and University of Leicester staff will give a presentation on Richard III and the Greyfriars dig. Music entertainment from MATUTO will then follow until 7.30pm, when light supper and refreshments will be served. After dinner, there will be more music, finishing at 9.00pm. The event is ticketed with a suggested donation of £15.

The evening will take place at:

St Martin’s House

Peacock Lane

Leicester

LE1 5PZ.
