A University of Leicester MBA student has launched a new Leicester-based record label which will act as a platform for up and coming musicians from diverse backgrounds.

Mor Music Group is an independent record label based in Leicester, UK. The company was founded in 2013 by Bemi Babalola from University of Leicester MBA (Masters in Business Administration) with funding from the University of Leicester and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Enterprise Inc Project.

Bemi, is a prolific songwriter with a song catalogue of over 100 songs and experience in the music industry. Prior to starting her MBA, she worked in the pharmaceutical industry.

She was a member of the Songwriters Guild of America while living in New York, and worked closely with music producers and artists in the city.

Mor Music Group aims to promote a diverse genre of quality music to a national and international audience.

The music featured on the label includes Pop, Hip-hop/R&B and Alternative rock music. In addition, the company aims to give up and coming recording artists from diverse backgrounds an opportunity to showcase their talent and deliver quality music at affordable prices.

Artists signed so far include singers Taylor Amy Crosby, Matthew Richards (stage name Matt R), Izzy Fortuin and rapper Rakim Bailey.

Mor Music Group is currently preparing for the launch of the first digital single by pop vocalist Matthew Richards (Matt R) scheduled for release on June 24 2013 via music sites like iTunes, Google play, and Amazon.

Bemi Babalola said: “Leicester is great for music – there are lots of underground musicians here who may not get the chance to work with the big record labels in London. I want to help give the artists a platform for them to get their music out in the open.”

Bob Athwal, Director of Career Development Service, said: “Mor Music Group will be a fantastic service for young and up and coming musicians - and it is fantastic to see talented University of Leicester students like Bemi Babalola are spearheading such exciting and important initiatives.

“It is very important to support student entrepreneurship, which is why we are proud to help fund projects like this through the Enterprise Inc Project  funded by the European Regional Development Fund.”

Rajinder Bhuhi, Enterprise Inc Project Manager at the Career Development Service, said: “Bemi has developed the idea, gained further business skills and knowledge and expanded her networks through Enterprise Inc giving the business tailored support to get started. This investment creates new businesses and longer term new jobs in the economy.”
