The University of Leicester Students’ Union has been named the best university students’ union country at the National Union of Students awards.

A team from the university’s students’ union picked up the award for Higher Education Students’ Union of the Year at the NUS Awards 2013 on Wednesday, July 3.

A team from the SU - including President Dan Flatt and Chief Executive Trevor Page, Maryna Danylchenko, Experience Officer, and Helen Senior, Director of Sales & Marketing - received the award at a glittering ceremony at the University of Manchester Students’ Union.

They saw off stiff competition from students’ unions at Bath, Bournemouth, Lancaster, Leeds, Sussex and Queen’s University Belfast to scoop the prize.

The union’s vision, campaigns and dedication to providing the best student experience for Leicester students helped it secure the award.

The award recognises the union’s focus on putting students’ needs at the heart of its organisational priorities.

This is reflected in the union’s policy to pay the Living Wage to all employees who are dependent on their earned income.

This year also saw a 150 per cent increase in candidates standing for the union’s parliament, and a new ‘blow up office’ scheme allowing students to approach sabbatical officers directly with feedback.

ULSU was one of just seven students’ unions to be shortlisted out of almost 100 entries for the HE Students’ Union of the Year Award alone. The NUS received more than 500 entries in total across 15 categories.

The judging panel included editors from the Guardian’s Universities section and Times Higher Education magazine, senior figures in charities such as Amnesty International UK and Oxfam as well as higher education policy advisers and business managers.

Dan Flatt, ULSU president, said: “We’ve always strived to be an exceptional union. This award recognises that we are, in fact, exceptional. It’s a great tribute to the hard work, commitment and dedication of everyone involved with the University of Leicester Students’ Union.”

Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Robert Burgess said: “I congratulate the Union on its splendid success.  The award reflects the very high standard of professional services that the Union offers to its members and it is also a testament to the unrivalled quality of facilities that the Union provides.”

The award rounds off an extremely successful year for the union. The Percy Gee building redevelopment earned the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) 2013 East Midlands regional award for Building Conservation, and the union also received the NUS Green Impact Students’ Unions Gold Excellence Award for sustainability.
