New study to explore whether oestrogen impacts how women perceive movement

University of Leicester researcher investigates the factors that affect motion perception in women

A study investigating the differences in motion perception between high and low oestrogen levels in older women could help researchers understand more about vision.

Kerry Raynes, a Master’s student with the University of Leicester’s School of Psychology, is currently researching the effect of age and oestrogen levels on motion perception in women.

Previous studies have shown that oestrogen levels can impact on contrast sensitivity. Kerry’s research will take this concept further by exploring the previously untouched subject of motion perception and how it may be affected by low and high oestrogen levels in older women.

Kerry’s experiment could help future researchers understand more about vision and what factors affect it.

Kerry said: “The more we know about visual processing in the older population, the better. Past research has shown that vision deteriorates with age and therefore it is important to continue research in this area.”

The study still requires participants, and Kerry invites members of the public who fit the required criteria to contact her by email on klr17@student.le.ac.uk.

Participants for the study should be women aged between 70 and 79 with normal, or corrected to normal, vision and no history of eye diseases. In order to observe the differences between oestrogen levels, the study requires participants who are on hormone replacement therapy and also those who are not.

Participants will receive £10 for their 2 hour study period and refreshments will be available.
