The University of Leicester’s Department of Criminology is to host a free public lecture by Air Chief Marshal Sir Clive Loader KCB OBE, Police and Crime Commissioner for Leicestershire and former Commander-in-Chief of Air Command.

The talk, ‘The Role of the Police and Crime Commissioner in Society’ takes place today (Wednesday 4 December 2013) at 5.15pm in the Frank and Katherine May Lecture Theatre in the Henry Wellcome Building.

This will be the latest talk in the Department of Criminology’s Scarman Lecture series, which are delivered by high-profile figures and aim to explore current issues in criminology, criminal justice, policing and community safety.

Professor Adrian Beck, Head of the Department of Criminology, said: “The Department of Criminology is delighted to welcome Sir Clive Loader, the Police and Crime Commissioner for Leicestershire, to give the third Scarman Lecture of 2013.

“November sees the first anniversary of the election of Police and Crime Commissioners to England and Wales, which brought about a fundamental change to police accountability and governance.

“This lecture will provide an excellent opportunity for students, staff and members of the public to hear from Sir Clive on how these new roles are working in practice and how they will develop in the future.”

Sir Clive Loader was a front-line pilot in the RAF, flying Harrier aircraft in air operations over Belize, the Falklands, Iraq and the Balkans, commanding personnel at almost every rank in the RAF.

As Commander-in-Chief of Air Command, he led 31,500 personnel for two years, and was responsible for the RAF’s recruitment training and operations within a delegated budget of £2.6 billion.

He was awarded the OBE in 1996 and knighted for services to the country in 2006, and elected Police and Crime Commissioner for Leicestershire in November 2012.

The lecture is free and open to all.

A wine reception will follow the lecture, providing the opportunity to meet and speak to Sir Clive Loader.
