Issued by University of Leicester Press Office on 11 December 2013

Four distinguished graduates from the University of Leicester will be taking part in Christmas University Challenge on BBC Two, competing against the University of Sussex in a first round match on Monday 30 December at 8pm.

This comes fifty years after students from the University of Leicester won the first ever series of the long-running BBC show in 1963.

Alumni from the University of Leicester will include: Dr Heather Couper CBE, international broadcaster and writer on astronomy, space and science and former president of the British Astronomical Association; Dr Susan Cook, broadcaster and author of novels including ‘On Dangerous Ground’; Ms Natalie Bennett, leader of the Green Party of England and Wales; and Nigel Henbest, science writer and broadcaster.

University Challenge is an academic quiz show where teams from different UK universities answer questions on all manner of subjects.

During Christmas University Challenge, teams of prominent graduates from 14 universities and university colleges will compete for the glory of their institutions and the honour of being declared series champions.

Each team will compete in one of seven first-round matches, with the first airing on Friday 20 December. The four teams with the highest winning scores will play in two semi-finals, with the winners meeting in the final, which will air on Friday 3 January.

Steve O’Connor, Director of Development and Alumni Relations at the University of Leicester, said: “The University of Leicester is honoured to be represented in Christmas University Challenge by esteemed members of our graduate community.

“All four members of our team have gone on to achieve great success in their chosen fields since graduating from Leicester and their successes and commitment to their careers will give us a fantastic opportunity in the competition. We wish them the best of luck.”

Peter Gwyn, executive producer, ITV Studios, said: “Christmas University Challenge demonstrates the strong intellectual and emotional ties that continue to bind people to the places where they studied. This provides an intriguing extra dimension to what is set to be a fiercely contested series.”
