Academics and teaching staff across the University of Leicester will shortly gather for a groundbreaking conference to promote student employability.

The University’s inaugural Employability Summit, which will feature talks from leading figures in the field of graduate recruitment, will be held on 2 July.

The day is aimed at finding new ways to maximise the potential for students to find work with leading employers in a range of industries.

Organisers will also present the University’s new Employability Strategy, a cross-departmental framework for student employability that will improve graduate prospects for all degree courses.

The summit will feature talks from:

• Carl Gilleard, chief executive of the Association of Graduate Recruiters (AGR), which represents more than 800 employers involved in graduate recruitment.

• Dr Paul Redmond, President-Elect of Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (AGCAS) and Head of Careers and Employability at the University of Liverpool.

• Paul Blackmore, Director, Employability and Graduate Development at the University of Exeter.

• Stephen McAuliffe, Director of the Centre for Career Development at the University of Nottingham.

The event has been spearheaded by Bob Athwal, the University’s newly appointed Director of Careers and former Head of Graduate Recruitment & Development at gas and electricity supplier npower.

Mr Athwal said: "The world of work is changing and therefore how we equip our students for the world of work needs to change too. Our inaugural Employability Summit is a golden opportunity for us to come together as an institution to share and agree our vision for employability.

"Everyone in the institution - staff, students and the Students' Union - has a responsibility to engage with the employability agenda, and it's only together that we'll be able to achieve the ambitious vision that this vitally important issue requires."

Professor Sir Robert Burgess, the University’s Vice-Chancellor said: “Employability is a critical area for our students and this inaugural event is extremely important for the University to increase our students’ opportunities in the world of work.”

Graduate recruiters from a variety of leading companies including Apple, PwC, BP, the NHS, Centrica, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Barclays Wealth and the European Union Selection Office will meet with Professor Sir Robert after the summit to discuss how the University can better prepare its students for the careers they have ahead of them.

The conference will be held at Peter Williams Lecture Theatre, University of Leicester, from 9am on 2 July.
