Graduates from the county join new scheme to encourage participation in sport

Issued by Leicester-Shire & Rutland Sport on 22 June 2012

A sport and physical activity trainee programme, inspired by the 2012 games, has been developed by Leicester-Shire and Rutland Sport and local partners.  The 12 month programme has created significant entry level posts with 11 new graduates being employed throughout Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland.

The graduates are supporting local sport and physical activity initiatives include the School Games, Sport Makers (a sports volunteering project) and Sportivate, a programme designed to get more 14 – 25 year olds involved in sport.

The eleven newly graduated students will not only benefit from a 12 months paid experience and free membership to CIMSPA (The Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity), but also add support to a much needed sector.  This is also an excellent opportunity to work closely with our local HE/FE-Degree Awarding institutions to add to our local 2012 legacy programme.

Andy Reed OBE, Chair of Leicester-Shire and Rutland Sport said: “With the sport and physical activity sector under significant financial scrutiny and budget pressures, leading to limited local capacity, the graduates will give a much needed boost to grass roots sport.”

In Oadby & Wigston this will support us join up school and community sport at a local level, helping us align, plan and resource more effectively.  Recently a number of national initiatives have materialised, which need additional local capacity and Lucy Baginskis will help us deliver these, ensuring that the young people of Oadby & Wigston get more opportunities to participate in sport and physical activity and ultimately lead to a healthier community.
