The University of Leicester UNICEF Society is organising a sponsored run to raise funds for UNICEF's work with disadvantaged children around the world. The student-run society is encouraging fellow students to take part in the one kilometre run, and have already signed up 25 willing participants.

The students will raise money through sponsorship, with all the proceeds going to UNICEF. UNICEF is the world's leading charity for children, working around the world to protect the rights of children and provide vital aid and assistance to disadvantaged communities.

Chizoba Okolo, who organised the run, said "By hosting this event, The UNICEF Society hopes to raise funds to help UNICEF UK provide life-saving resources for children all over the world. I hope people in Leicester will join in our efforts to help these children by registering for this event. Please sign-up to give a few minutes of your time and I promise you will be surprised what a great difference you have made in the life of a child."

The UNICEF society is asking students, staff and members of the public to sign up for the short run, which will take place in Victoria Park on Wednesday 21 March.

Students from the UNICEF society work on campus to raise awareness of UNICEF and its work, and to fundraise for the charity. Past events organised by the UNICEF society include bake sales, campus raids and sponsored walks. Members of the team have also taken part in marathons and half marathons around the UK to raise money for the children's charity.

The University of Leicester Students' Union has a long tradition of fundraising, with many student-run societies organising activities and events to raise money in support of various charities worldwide. The Union's main fundraising society, Raising and Giving (RAG), raised almost £126,000 last year for a number of local and international charities.

The 1km run will take place on Wednesday 21 March at 3pm in Victoria Park. Members of the public can take part in the run - sponsorship forms are available from All proceeds will go to UNICEF.
