University's arts centre lines up ten concerts for music lovers

Issued by Embrace Arts on 23 February 2012

Leicester music lovers can enjoy 10 different jazz, blues and classical music concerts in March thanks to Embrace Arts.

Two great jazz and blues bands return to the University of Leicester’s arts centre on Lancaster Road (next to the fire station) as part of its Music at the Arts Bar sessions. Derby-based vibes player Corey Mwamba brings his free-wheeling, spontaneous and creative combination of jazz, folk and electronica to Leicester on Friday 2 March, while the ever-popular local singer / songwriter Mellow Baku creates some improvised interplay with her friends Mike Sole (keys) and Michael Brome aka Sureshot (poetry and percussion) on Friday 30 March.

Leicester Jazz House continues its top-quality Friday Jazz series on 23 March when with John Law to the city with his latest project, a piano duo with his very talented ex-student Mark Pringle, on 23 March.

Classical music lovers can enjoy two high-quality concerts during the month. The Coull Quartet continues its chamber music season with a programme of Haydn, Shostakovich and Beethoven on Friday 9; meanwhile, Charles Owen presents a lunchtime piano recital of Bach, Bartók and Schumann on Wednesday 28.

Embrace Arts supports local music on behalf of the University through its associated group scheme and March see five such concerts. Brian Humpherson, former head of music at Guthlaxton College, brings his swinging Quintet with Nicole van de Kuinder on vocals to Embrace Arts on Saturday 3, while Knighton Chamber Orchestra play at Fraser Noble Hall on the same night. The University’s student music societies (Saturday 24), LU Chorus (Sunday 25) and the University of Leicester Sinfonia (Saturday 31) bring the month to a close.

Tickets cost from just £4 and are available to book online at or by calling the Embrace Arts box office on Leicester (0116) 252 2455.
