Students from the University of Leicester are completing a 24-hour sponsored rowing relay to help fund research into a rare form of bone cancer. The money raised will be donated to Ewing's Sarcoma Research Trust, a charity set up by student Matt Short after he was diagnosed with the disease.

Members of the University of Leicester Boat Club and volunteers from the Students' Union will row non-stop between 10am on Tuesday and 10am on Wednesday. They will take it in turns to keep the rowing machines moving throughout the night, and hope to collect donations on the day and online.

Ewing's Sarcoma is a rare form of bone cancer that usually affects children and teenagers. Funding for research into Ewing's is scarce, and the Ewing's Sarcoma Research Trust aims to fund further studies into alternative treatments, and raise awareness of the disease among young people.

The Trust was founded by Matt Short, who was diagnosed with Ewing's in 2007 and again in 2010, when the cancer returned to his lung. In 2011, whilst recovering from aggressive chemotherapy and surgery, he decided to set up a charity to help others who suffer with the disease and to provide much-needed funding for research.

Matt Short will be present at the rowing marathon to talk to students about the disease and the Trust.

The Students' Union is supporting the Boat Club in its fundraising efforts, with student development officers Ian Read and Holly Roberts taking the first shifts on the rowing machines to get the marathon underway. The University of Leicester Students' Union has a long tradition of fundraising - last year the student-run Raising and Giving (RAG) society raised almost £126,000 for local and international charities.

Ian Read said: "This is a fantastic way to raise awareness and money for such a great cause. The University of Leicester Boat Club are an extremely active and fit group, and Holly and I are honoured to be starting off this marathon 24 hour row. We are just glad we don’t have to do the 2am slot!"

The sponsored 24-hour row will take place between 10am Tuesday 21 February and 10am Wednesday 22 February, in the Queen's Hall, University of Leicester Students' Union (Percy Gee Building).
