The University of Leicester volunteering association, Contact Student Volunteers, has organised a community conservation event on Saturday 29  October as part of the nationwide Make a Difference volunteering day. Contact Student Volunteers have teamed up with Leicester City Council and the University of Leicester Environment Team to help restore and revitalise sections of Leicester’s River Soar.

Under the guidance of the City Council’s Riverside Team an enthusiastic group of student volunteers will help clear up the riverbed that runs alongside the King Power Stadium. This much needed conservation work will breathe new life into the area around the stadium which has been damaged and exposed to littering. Cleaning the riverbed will improve the area for all Leicester City fans as well as the local community, and will help increase wildlife in the area.

Make a Difference Day is a national event which promotes volunteering throughout the UK each year. Voluntary organisations up and down the country hold events for the day, with thousands of volunteers taking part to really make a difference. Contact Student Volunteers have chosen to make their Riverside Rescue event a part of Make a Difference Day, as it will highlight the importance of maintaining Leicester’s communal areas as well as conserving the city’s wildlife.

Gareth Hughes, the University of Leicester Volunteering Events Co-ordinator, says:

‘We have decided to take part in Make a Difference day with our Riverside Rescue event because it is a great chance for University of Leicester students to help improve the environment in Leicester and to make a difference in a location that means a lot to the local community’
