Lecture by Michael Wood on 20 May

Issued by University of Leicester Press Office on 11 may 2011

On Friday 20 May 2011 at the University of Leicester, historian and television presenter Michael Wood, who is to receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters from the University in July, will be talking about filming his acclaimed series The Story of England, and why Leicestershire history matters.

‘An Evening with Michael Wood’ will be hosted by the Leicestershire Victoria County History Trust at the University of Leicester.

In the BBC Television six-part series called The Story of England, Michael Wood traced a thousand years of English history through the records of the Leicestershire parish of Kibworth.

Staff from the University of Leicester were involved in the series, both as experts and in the field - helping the people of Kibworth dig up their back gardens in search of archaeological finds, from prehistoric flints to Georgian coaching inns and frame knitters’ workshops.

The lecture takes place at 7.30pm in Ken Edwards Building, Lecture Theatre 1 on the University’s main campus.

Tickets are £10 each including a wine reception and parking. All the profit from this event will go to support the work of Leicestershire Victoria County History Trust (registered charity 1128575), which provides training and support to volunteers who are researching and writing the histories of towns and villages across Leicestershire.

Tickets are available from the Secretary at 5 Salisbury Road, Leicester, LE1 7QR. Cheques should be made payable to Leicestershire Victoria County History Trust.

Founded in 1899 and originally dedicated to Queen Victoria, the Victoria County History provides a record of England's places and people from earliest times to the present day. Five volumes have been produced for Leicestershire, the last in 1964.

Forty volunteers have recently begun to research the histories of some of the 300 Leicestershire towns and villages that have yet to be included in the series. These town and village histories will be published on the internet as they are completed, and within printed volumes.

Leicestershire Victoria County History Trust is supported by the Leicestershire County Council, the University of Leicester, Harvey Ingram LLP and the Michael Bishop Foundation.
