One of the UK’s best-loved and internationally-acclaimed Quartets is to give a recital at Embrace Arts, the University of Leicester’s arts centre, on Friday 4 March at 7.30pm.

Issued by University of Leicester Press Office on 28 February 2011

The Coull Quartet will play Haydn’s Quartet in F minor Op 20, Tippett’s Quartet no 1 and Schubert’s Quartet in G major D887 in the intimate setting of Embrace Arts’ recital hall, giving the audience chance to experience the power of the music at close hand.

The concert will be the second in a series of three at Embrace Arts.  There is a further concert on Friday 6 May. Renowned for its rare combination of maturity and freshness, the Coull Quartet has been Quartet-in-Residence at the University of Warwick since 1977.

The Quartet has performed and broadcast extensively throughout the UK, the USA and Western Europe, and has also toured China, India, the Far East, South America and Australia.

In the UK it has appeared at most of the major music societies and festivals, recorded over thirty CDs and commissioned many new works from leading British composers.

The Quartet’s cellist, Nick Roberts, has said, “We really enjoy playing in Leicester and the hall at Embrace Arts is an excellent venue for chamber music.  We have a wonderful audience who make us feel welcome and help us create a relaxed, unstuffy atmosphere at each concert.”

Tickets costing £15 (£12 concession) are available from Embrace Arts, Richard Attenborough centre, Lancaster Road, Leicester LE1 7HA, tel 0116 252 2455.

A limited number of tickets for £2.50 will be available from 30 minutes before the performance for NUS card holders, subject to status and availability.

Embrace Arts presents a wide programme of classical music and jazz.   Forthcoming jazz events include Music at the Arts Bar with local musician Mellow Baku and the Mike Sole Quartet (3 March, 8pm), the Brian Humpherson Quintet (5 March, 7.30pm), and Leicester Jazz House with John Law Opt Trio (25 March, 8pm).

For those of a classical turn of mind, the University of Leicester Sinfonia, conductor Michael Sackin, will give a concert of Bartok, Dvorak and Sonja Grossner (5 March, 7.30 at the Fraser Noble Hall, London Road/University Road).
